About Us

Our Mission Statement

To offer our customers a unique range of well-designed, great quality childrenswear that is manufactured in an environmentally responsible way.

The Kite Story

Having spent our careers buying clothing for high street retailers (and learning too much about the effect of cotton production on both the environment and the farmers) we decided that we needed to set up a business with a conscience. Not only have we grown in experience over the years but we have also had families and become very conscious about the planet that our children will inherit!

We didn’t want to sacrifice either the style or quality of our garments. What we felt particularly strongly about was producing a range of beautiful and contemporary styled childrenswear which compromises nothing by being made from organic cotton. The result is Kite Kids, an exciting new childrenswear brand which has its own unique style and is available only directly from ourselves. We’re based in Poole in Dorset so the range has also been inspired by our love of the outdoors – big skies and fantastic beaches – so our clothes are built to last whether worn on beach, mountain or sofa!

The Ethical Cotton Story

Cotton is a soft fibre that grows around the seeds of the cotton plant, a shrub native to hot parts of the world such as the Indian Subcontinent, Africa and Turkey. The fibre is most often spun into thread and used to make a soft, breathable fabric and is, in fact, the most widely used natural fibre found in clothing today.

Cotton represents a huge 10% of the world’s total agricultural yield. To grow this amount of cotton farmers use 25% of world pesticides, herbicides and chemical fertilizers. These pesticides cause 20,000 deaths per year worldwide from accidental poisoning. Conventional cotton farming is also responsible for colossal greenhouse gas emissions due to the chemical fertilisers and the long-term contamination of water supplies. In the developing world, where cotton is a very important commercial crop, the farmers are given virtually no information on the dangers of the pesticides that they are sold – many of which are banned in the US and Europe.

Many of the larger retailers would have us believe that they do not use organic cotton because it is too expensive. The bottom line is that organic cotton clothing doesn’t have to be expensive and by wearing it you are pledging your support for protecting our planet and the people that farm it. At Kite Kids we are doing our bit towards improving this situation and hope that, with your support, we can all make a real difference. Let's all do what we can to help save the lives of cotton farmers and protect this beautiful planet we all live on.
